DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County defeated Nelson County 74-61 to claim the championship of the Lady Marshal Holiday Classic Wednesday at Reed Conder Gymnasium.
Nelson County scored six straight points to open the fourth quarter, cutting a 51-43 Lady Marshal lead to 51-49.
But Marshall senior point guard Tory Fehrenbacher hit four straight free throws, then stole the ball and scored on a layup to answer the Nelson surge.
That was the beginning of a 19-1 explosion by Marshall County that pushed the lead to 70-52 before Nelson County recovered.
The victory was the eighth in a row for 9-1 Marshall County. Nelson County, 7-2, saw a six-game winning streak snapped.
Taylor Meadows topped all scorers for Marshall County with 21 points, followed by Allie York with 18 and Fehrenbacher with 12.
Cierra Drake, Nelson County’s 6-3 junior center, led the Lady Cards with 18. A.J. Lewis added 15.
The Lady Cards from Bardstown defeated Graves County 49-37 on Monday and then edged Covington, Tenn. 51-48 and handled Lyon County 62-35 on Tuesday to move into the championship game.
Marshall County came from behind to defeat Pleasure Ridge Park 54-49 in Monday’s nightcap, then whipped Union County 70-43 and Apollo 61-32 on Tuesday.
In the third-place game, Covington, Tenn., ran out to a 12-0 lead after one quarter, extended it to 25-2 at the half and rode that to a 51-22 victory over Pleasure Ridge Park of Louisville.
Graves County defeated Owensboro Apollo 61-47 for fifth place and Union County defeated Lyon County 50-38 to take seventh place.

Marshals keep rolling, 69-45 over Union County
MADISONVILLE – Marshall County defeated Union County 69-45 in the Hancock Bank/Brand 40 Classic at Madisonville Wednesday.
The Marshals meet host Madisonville-North Hopkins at 8 p.m. tonight and take on Warren Central at 2 p.m. Friday.
Marshall County, the First Region’s top-ranked team, improved to 7-0 with the win while Union County dropped to 2-5.
Madisonville, of the Second Region, dropped to 5-2 with an 82-70 loss to Warren Central Wednesday. The Dragons, out of the Fourth Region, are 4-3.
Both the Marshals and Lady Marshals will travel to Mt. Sterling to play in the Gateway Holiday Tournament hosted by Montgomery County High School next week.
