MURRAY – Marshall County will meet the winner of a play-in round match between Calloway County and Mayfield in their opening game of the District 2 soccer tournament at Jim Nix Soccer Complex Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Marshals will play following the Lady Marshals’ game against Graves County at 5 p.m. that evening.
Calloway is the likely opponent. The Lakers reeled off six straight victories from Sept. 15 through Sept. 29, the second one an 11-1 thumping of Mayfield. The Cardinals are winless in 17 matches this year.
Also during that winning streak, Calloway pulled off a 2-1 win over Marshall County.
The Marshals are 12-5-2, 7-2 in district play. They had won six in a row before Calloway ended that streak Sept. 29.
Atop the seedings is Murray, 11-7-1 and 8-2-0 in the district. The Tigers will open tourney play tonight at 7 p.m. against the winner of a play-in game scheduled Monday between Graves County and Community Christian.
MC finished the season by losing three of their last four games.
n The Marshals fell to 12th-ranked Henderson County Oct. 4 by a 2-0 score.
The Colonels scored late in the first half and added a goal on a corner kick with two seconds left in the match.
n Two nights later, the Marshals dropped a 2-0 decision to surging Heath at West Paducah. Hayden Pace and Jonathan Emmons scored goals for the Pirates.
