DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County finished pres-season tune-up action with a 22-6 victory over Union County at Carroll Traylor Stadium.
The team welcomed transfer senior Andrew Bennett, a 5-11, 180-pound quarterback/defensive back who has been practicing with the team for about a week.
The Marshals went up 3-0 on a 27-yard field goal by Brian Dueker late in the first quarter and never trailed.
Freshman Marty Holbrook scored the first of three Marshal touchdowns, on a one-yard run after Thad McPherson was tackled just short of the goal line after hauling in a pass from Cole Barnard. That play covered 69 yards.
Senior Hardin Cosner added a second TD on a 20-yard run and junior Jamie Gilland got the final score on a one-yard run.
The Marshals managed to convert only one of three extra-point attempts.
“Our offensive line did a much better job of pass protection,” head coach Ron Barnard said.
Defensively, Barnard said, “I thought we were very physical. I’m still not happy with our angles in the secondary.”
McLean County, the opponent for Friday night’s regular-season opener in the Hall of Fame game, opened their season Friday night with a 56-0 loss at Edmonson County. The Cougars, a Class 3A team, were 0-11 last year.
