Murray The Lady Marshals took their game on the road last week and the first stop was Laker territory.
The Marshals (17-3) defeated Calloway County 4-2 Thursday evening in a come-from-behind victory.
The lady Marshals were wielding their usual hot sticks but Laker left field play by sophomore Jackie Metcalf kept the Lady Marshals from their scoring routine.
Marshall County assistant coach Patricia Greer said Metcalf was phenomenal.
“She made more catches than I’ve ever seen.” Greer said. “It was unbelievable.”
“We were drilling hits to left field and she would make the diving catch.”
The Marshals were down 0-1 and then tied the game but Calloway came right back and got a run making the score 1-2.
Then it happened.
With runners at second and third base eighth grader Mallory Young stepped into the batters box and got the big hit.
Both runners scored putting Marshall County up by a score of 3-2.
Jordan Gilland sealed the deal when she stole home on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.
The Marshals opened the game on the mound with hard-hitting pitching from Stephanie Helton.
Midway through the game they brought in junior Jessie Phelps, in an effort to keep Calloway’s batters off balance.
The strategy has worked well for Marshall County this year because the two pitchers have such different styles.
“It’s hard for hitters to adjust when we switch pitchers,” Greer said. “We pitched Helton for four innings before we made the switch. They are such a contrast it throws batters off.”
The remainder of scheduled games were canceled for the week due to rain.
The Lady Marshals are scheduled to face Reidland at 5 p.m. Thursday night at MCHS.
