DRAFFENVILLE Marshall County just needed to win the game against Community Christian Academy Monday night in order to make it to the 4th District Tournament game on Thursday night. Nobody said it needed to be a blow-out, but the Marshals were able to do just that to get the 106-42 win over the Warriors.
Scott McKenty opened the contest with a three-pointer field goal, followed by his first steal and pass to Cory York. York capitalized on the play and made a layup, drawing the foul making it a three-point play.
After an interception by Travis Spiceland which resulted in a layup by Denver Seay and a three-pointer by York, the Marshals were up 12-0 just two minutes into the first quarter.
CCA scored its first basket with 5:47 on the clock despite Marshall County’s intense man-to-man defense.
Three minutes later, Seay recorded his second assist after a field goal by Josh Madding sent the Marshals ahead 22-5.
The Warriors, whom assciate coach Ron Winemiller said were good shooters, didn’t seem to get a good look at the basket.
“I think that’s a great credit to our defense,” Winemiller said. “We really kind of held them out of what they were trying to do.”
With 23 seconds left in the first quarter, Logan Holland scored his first two points of the night. He then scored four more back to back, to end the quarter. Winemiller said he wasn’t surprised that Holland was able to score six points in less than 30 seconds.
“That’s what happens when you run the floor and you do what’s asked of you and you do the little things,” Winemiller said. “He’s great at that he’s done it all year and tonight was no exception.”
A three-point field goal by Madding startd the second quarter and enlarged the lead to 37-7.
After a jumper by Matt Fletcher, the Warriors scored twice in a row, putting five more points on the board.
That didn’t seem to slow the Marshals down any; less than two minutes later MCHS had scored nine more points to push the score 48-12.
With an 11-4 run and another bucket by Holland at the buzzer, the Marshals went into halftime with their largest lead of the game at 59-18.
Holland, McKenty, Madding and Seay were the only four Marshals to score in the third quarter. But with a combined total of 23 points in the quarter, MCHS held CCA at seven points for the quarter.
Despite the low score for the Warriors, Winemiller applauded their efforts.
“I thought it was great,” Winemiller said. “I they played hard the whole game. Little No. 10 [Lyle Rommelman] had a great game. We had a lot of different guys on him and we really struggled to guard him. He’s a nice player, if he had other players around him, he could be really special in the first region.”
All 15 of the Marshals played and scored but Winemiller said he was exceptionally proud of the five seniors.
“I thought they have us great efforts, great leadership, great focus, and that’s what it’s going to take if we want to reach the goals that we’ve set.”
One of the goals the Marshals set was to win their fifth district tournament in a row. Although MCHS doesn’t know who it will be playing for the title (the results of the Murray/Calloway County game Tuesday night were not available at press time), Winemiller said the team will be prepared for either opponent.
“It depends on who we play,” Winemiller said. “The game plan will change depending on who we play and we’ll prepare for both. As a matter of fact I’m going to go in [the office] and start watching tape and preparing for both teams. Whoever we play we’ll already be ready for both.”
