Bohrman signs to play at Murray

By Caitlin Wardlow
Tribune-Courier Reporter

DRAFFENVILLE – Cara Bohrman, a senior on the girls’ soccer team at Marshall County High School, has signed with Murray State University to play on its soccer team.
Bohrman signed the papers last Wednesday at MCHS.

Bohrman, who is MSU’s only Kentucky recruit, said she’s very excited to be a part of the team.

“After going for my visit and meeting the team and staying night with the team and watching them play, I fell in love with it,” Bohrman said. “I fell in love with the team. I’ve known some of the coaches for years. Having Kalli [McCoy] and Laken [Dirkes, who played at MCHS and are now playing for MSU] there will help a lot too, getting to play with some of my old teammates.”

Bohrman has been mainstay on the right side of the Lady Marshals’ defense since her sophomore year. She scored seven goals and had 11 assists in her four years of high school soccer, including the game-winning goal in overtime of the 2006 1st Region final.

Head coach Michael Boone said the team will miss Bohrman’s speed on defense.

“We’ve got to totally revamp the defense,” Boone said. “I was watching our sectional game, and there’s Cara dribbling down the sideline across to Hannah [Ellis] for that second goal. That put us over the top to go to the Final Four. We don’t have that type of player now that Cara brought to the field.”

Boone said replacing Bohrman won’t be possible, but that hopefully the team will find someone who can contribute like she did.

“We’re certainly not going to be able to replace her,” Boone said. “Kinda like Laken and Kalli, you can’t replace those type of Division 1 players. You just hope you can get someone in there to fill the void, she’s definitely going to be missed as the speedster down the wing.”

During her senior year of high school, Bohrman was named to the All-District team, 2nd team All-Region and the State All-Tournament Team during the Final Four.

Bohrman said she will continue to be ambitious in soccer at MSU.

“[MSU’s soccer team] graduated a lot of their senior defenders last year,” Bohrman said, “so I’m hoping to continue to work hard and maybe get quite a bit of playing time.”

Boone has no doubt in Bohrman’s capability on MSU’s soccer team.

“With her height and speed and competitiveness, she’s going to get right in there and scratch and claw for whatever playing time she can get,” Boone said. “I know Cara’s going do a great job. She’s going to work hard. Whatever happens is going to happen, and we look forward to watching all three of them hopefully on the field at the same time next season.”
