BOWLING GREEN Marshall County’s back-and-forth start to the softball season continued Saturday with two strong performances against talented teams.
The Lady Marshals opened the day with a 10-inning, 1-0 win over defending state champion Greenwood, then lost 1-0 in 10 innings to Warren Central.
“We could be 0-6 today,” MCHS head coach Jennifer Burnham said, referring to the Lady Marshals’ tough early-season schedule. “For us to be 3-3 after playing who we’ve played I’m ecstatic.”
Against Greenwood, MCHS pitcher Randi Butler struck out four batters and scattered five hits in front of a solid defense that made only one error.
In the 10th inning, Stephanie Helton sacrifice-bunted Allee Moore from second to third, setting up Butler’s game-winning grounder. The ball went back to the pitcher, but Moore made it to the plate in time.
Butler struck out eight batters against Warren Central, but MCHS managed only two hits and lost when Warren scored in the bottom of the 10th.
Burnham said Butler was suffering from a shoulder problem during a 6-1 loss at Reidland in the first week of the season, and that her performance Saturday in Bowling Green is more indicative of her potential.
“Going up there, she was nervous because of who she was facing,” Burnham said. “She couldn’t have done better.”
MCHS played Tuesday at Henderson County. Results were unavailable at press time.
The Lady Marshals will host the Marshall County Slugfest this weekend and will then host Lone Oak on Tuesday.
