Holland, York to play at WKCTC

DRAFFENVILLE – A pair of Marshall County seniors have decided to continue their basketball careers close to home.

Logan Holland and Cory York signed last week to play at West Kentucky Community and Technical College in Paducah.

Holland played varsity basketball for three years and started 29 of the Marshals’ 31 games last season. He led MCHS in rebounding with 6.8 per game and averaged 4.7 points per contest. He shot 56.9 percent from the field, third best on the team.

Holland said he visited Centre College and considered playing football there but decided playing basketball near home was a better option.

“Everybody asks me which sport is my favorite, and it’s whichever one I’m playing at the time,” Holland said.

Holland said being able to work with the coaching staff at MCHS, led by head coach Gus Gillespie, helped prepare him for life after high school.

“There’s a really awesome program here,” Holland said. “It helped me carry over to playing college ball.”

York started all 31 games in his only season with the Marshals. He averaged 7.3 points and 3 rebounds per game and was the team’s best three-point shooter at 42.9 percent (39-for-91).

“I’m very excited,” York said. “It’s surprising. I never expected to do anything like this. I just want to have a good time and play.”

Don Rudolph, basketball sponsor at WKCTC, said the school is excited to add Holland and York to the basketball team.

“We watched them play all year off and on, and we were really impressed with their fundamentals,” Rudolph said. “They’re good team players and they work hard.”

Holland and York’s performance in the classroom was one of the big things that made them attractive to WKCTC, Rudolph said.

“More importantly than [their playing ability] is that they’re strong academically,” Rudolph said. “We can’t give straight athletic scholarships, but when they are strong academically, it allows us to give them some financial aid.”
