DRAFFENVILLE – In Monday’s highly-anticipated showdown of 4th District foes, Marshall County made a statement with an 11-1, five-inning victory over Murray.

“We’ve been hitting the ball well, but everything seems to be going well for us right now,” MCHS head coach Don Bock said.

The Marshals lit the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Johnson’s grounder was fielded but thrown over the fence, allowing Gerick Sullivan to score from second base.

MCHS batted around in the fourth inning, scoring six runs to take command. Brantley Barrett doubled Cody Forsythe home, and Austin York singled Cameron Kimball to the plate. Barrett later scored on an error, and Tyler O’Daniel capped off the frame with a three-run home run.

Murray tallied a run in the top of the fifth, but MCHS enacted the mercy rule with four in the bottom of the inning. Garrett Hunt hit a two-run shot to left field, and Johnson ended the game with a two-run single.

“People are going to look at that score and take note, but baseball’s a game that can humble you as fast as it makes you feel exhiliration,” Bock said. “We can’t be too elated now or too dejected if things don’t go our way.”

One thing that has been going the Marshals’ way so far this season is pitching. That continued Monday as Forsythe pitched all five innings, allowing an unearned run and two hits while striking out two and walking one.

“[Cody] hasn’t had a bad outing yet,” Bock said. “He’s spotting the ball real well, and he maintains his composure. He’s starting to assert himself.”

The players seem to be enjoying themselves so far this season, which easy to understand since they’ve only lost once so far. Bock said it will be important to find the right balance of focus and enjoyment.

“It’s a great bunch of kids,” Bock said. “They’ve got great team chemistry, strong moral character, and they pick each other up. We can be a special bunch if we keep doing what we’re doing. We’ve got to keep building, though.”

MCHS was scheduled to face the Tigers again Tuesday afternoon in Murray, the first of two home-and-home district series this season. The Marshals will do the same thing with Calloway County starting Monday at MCHS and coming to Draffenville next Tuesday.

MCHS opened with an 11-1 over Montgomery Central (Tenn.) and followed with a 6-3 victory over Clarksville, Tenn.

Against Clarksville, the Marshals got off to a fast start, scoring three in the first and two in the second. Kody Charlton stifled Clarksville’s bats through the first four innings, and Sullivan and Johnson took the mound in the final three innings to preserve the victory.

MCHS also has a pair of games scheduled against Christian County and will play in two weeks in the Franklin-Simpson Wood Bat Tournament.

“We see Christian County on our schedule twice, Lexington Lafayette and Owensboro Apollo,”Bock said, “and we know it’s not going to be as easy as we’ve made it look so far.”
