DRAFFENVILLE The Marshals tennis team held match play with Paducah Tilghman Thursday and the Lady Marshals turned in a team score of 3-6.
Anna Downey beat Tilghman’s Sarah Harris 8-4.
The Lady Marshals also posted two wins in doubles competition with McCrory/ Doom defeating Harris/ Durbin 8-3.
The Hendrickson/ Henson duo handed Paducah Tilghman’s Humphrey/ Reed an 8-4 loss.
The mens squad did not fair as well against Tilghman.
The squad lost nine of nine singles matches to Paducah and all three doubles matches.
MCHS coach Rick Rosa is continuing with the rebuilding of the program. “We’re moving slow and steady but we’ve got a long road ahead of us,” Rosa said. “I’ve got this group of seniors who have not played tennis before so we are starting from scratch.”
Rosa believes in the basics.
“We did a lot of conditioning early on and I think that helped,” Roas said. It’s been tough though. We’ve won one match and lost five.”
Rosa knows he has his work cut out for him.
I’m not expecting too much from the kids,” Rosa said. “I want them to do their best and to get better every match they play. If they do that we will become a good team.”
He said he is starting to see results.
“My guys are getting better despite what the numbers reflect,” Rosa said. “We will play one of the best teams in the area Tuesday the 21st,” Rosa said.
Marshall County meets Lone Oak April 21, at 4 p.m. for a match at MCHS.
