DRAFFENVILLE– The Lady Marshals (13-3) softball team added six wins and one loss to their record this last week.

The Marshals beat Lone Oak 6-5 on Tuesday and Calloway County 10-6 Thursday before leaving town for battle in the 20 team Border Wars Tournament in Martin, Tenn.

The Lady Marshals won their pool play at the tournament defeating three teams.

In the first round of the tournament they handed the team from Gleason, Tn. a stunning 15-0 loss.

The second round of tournament play ended in a 0-6 loss for the Marshals at the hands of Milan, Tn.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association currently puts Marshall County in first place in Region 1 with a 12-2-0 record.

Head coach Jennifer Burnham is pleased with the team’s performance.

“We’ve been getting a lot of hits,” Burnham said. “We had a slow start this year due to all the rain but the girls are coming together and playing as a team. We have some momentum.”

Lady Marshals assistant coach Patricia Greer said the team has been hitting well.

“I’d say our leading hitters are Anna Maziarka, Roni Ray and Jordan Gilland,” Greer said. “Anna is our lead-off hitter and she’s been doing a good job setting the table for Jordan.”

Marshall County’s pitching is holding opponents to minimum scoring.

Stephanie Helton, Jessi Phelps and Emily Jenkins are on the mound for the Marshals.

“They each have a different style of pitching,” Greer said. “Stephanie throws the ball the hardest but Jessi is a spin pitcher and she’s got more break on the ball. Jessi is about control and accuracy.”

“Emily throws hardest of all but she’s so young she hasn’t developed the control our other pitchers have yet,” Greer said.

The Marshals will face Graves County Tuesday April, 21 for a double header, at Graves County, which will include the make-up game for the Swinging for a Cure breast cancer awareness “pink” game. Play starts at 5 p.m.
