DRAFFENVILLE The abundance of rain has kept the Marshals off the field for most of the start of the 2009 baseball season.
Going into the weekend the team had played only two of eight scheduled games.
Marshall County opened the season March 24, in a contest at MCHS, against Paducah’s Community Christian Academy. The Marshals recorded a 22-2 win over CCA.
The club’s second game of the season was an 11-6 win over Ballard Memeorial March 26, on Ballard’s home turf.
Friday, the Marshals played host to visiting Prarie Lutheren, who traveled from Racine, Wisconsin.
When the umpire failed to arrive by game time, the two teams split the officiating duties and got down to business.
The Marshals put three points on the board before the first inning ended. They beat Prairie Lutheran 8-3 on a seven-hitter by Daniel Riley.
On Saturday, the Marshals traveled to Christian County.
Christian County’s Cole Isom pitched a three-hitter handing Marshall County its first loss of the season.
Isom held the Marshals scoreless in the 3-0 Colonels’ victory with Riley getting two hits.
The Marshall County (3-1) squad will spend spring break playing ball and have three games scheduled for the ramainder of the week.
MCHS head coach Don Bock said the weather has been frustrating. “We just want to play ball,” Bock said. “I don’t want the team to get stiff. “
Bock has high expectations for the team despite the soggy start to the season. “Once we get going we should be pretty good,” Bock said. “The team is focused and confident.”
