MAYFIELD The boys Second District trophy returned to Marshall County Thursday night. Following a muddy second half stand-off against Graves County in the opening round (see C6), top-seeded Marshall County met Murray High School in the final round, winning the contest 5-2.
The dynamic duo of Tyler McKenty and Sawyer York were a part of all five of Marshall County’s scores, beginning with a penalty kick less than five minutes into play. McKenty took the kick, giving the Marshals a 1-0 lead.
“Our two forwards, Tyler and Sawyer, were just flying up the field,” said head coach Don Walker. “Usually on a muddy field you think your guys are moving slower.”
If they were, it was still faster than the Tigers could keep up with. McKenty teamed up with York midway through the half, sending him a pass which York headed into the goal for the second score. McKenty also connected with Austin English minutes later as the Marshals went up 3-0. McKenty netted the final goal of the half in the final two minutes off an assist from York.
The Tigers were able to prevent the shutout in the second half following a penalty kick by Jordan Benton. The Marshals answered four minutes later with a penalty kick of their own. Jeremy Edmonds sent a high arching shot toward the goal, which McKenty headed in for the 5-1 lead.
The Tigers would score midway through the half on a corner kick, but continued to have problems with Marshall’s midfield.
“The last battle we had at our place was the same kind of contest,” Walker said of the physical matchup in less than ideal playing conditions. Three days of tournament play in cold, wet weather had taken its toll on host Mayfield’s Bill Hale Field.
With the win, the Marshals advance to play Paducah Tilghman Wednesday in the First Region tournament at Heath.
