CALLOWAY COUNTY Calloway County knew it’s always tough to beat a team three times in one season, especially if it’s the Lady Marshals. The Lady Marshals played with a lot of intensity and a will to win rattling the Lady Lakers and holding Averee Fields to just 18 points. It was tough to stop her on the boards in rebounding. Fields pulled down 26 rebounds for the Lady Lakers with 21 of those coming at the defensive end. Kelsey Lawson was hot from three point range hitting six of 11 for her game total of 20 points. It looked as if the night could belong to the Lady Marshals if a few more balls had rolled their way.
An inbounds play to Michaela Hunt and a field goal at the buzzer tied the teams at 11 going into the second quarter.
Both teams tied it up again in the second quarter at 13 and again at 16. A three by Calloway extended their lead to 23-17. Lawson would sink one at the free throw line followed by a field goal by Mariah McKenty and the Lady Marshals cut into Calloway’s lead 23-20. A three by Calloway’s Morgan Smotherman extended the lead by Calloway back to six and the Lady Lakers took a 26-20 lead into halftime.
With the score 34-28 in the third quarter, Lawson’s basket was good and she was fouled making one at the line, cutting Calloway’s lead to 34-31. The Lady Lakers put three more points on the board to end the third quarter up 37-31 over the Lady Marshals.
Lady Laker Abby Futrell’s three to start the fourth quarter extended their lead to 40-31. Lawson hit another three followed by a free throw from Margaret Thomas and Calloway’s lead was cut to five. With four minutes left to play, Kaylin Goins sank two at the line cutting the Calloway lead to 44-40. Futrell got loose for a layup with under two and half minutes to go, extending Calloway’s lead to 48-41. The Lady Marshals played tight man-to-man coverage in the final minutes, causing Calloway Head Coach Scott Sivills to call a time out after Fehrenbacher trapped a Lady Laker at half court. With time running out, the Lady Marshals forced a foul and lost the hard fought game by a final score of 53-46, missing out on a berth in the Region One Tournament for the first time since 1993.
Lawson led all scorers on the night with 20 points and the Lady Marshals caused Calloway to turn over the ball 13 times.
The Lady Marshals end the season with a 17-10 overall record.
