CALLOWAY COUNTY Marshall County and Calloway County met for the 4th District Championship last Thursday at Calloway County High School following the girls championship game which was won by the Lady Tigers of Murray High, coached by former MCHS standout Rechelle Turner. The Lady Tigers defeated the Calloway County Lady Lakers by a final score of 61-54.
Playing Calloway County for the fourth time this season after defeating them in three previous meetings would be no small task.
Andrew Edwards put the first points on the board for the Marshals. After Edwards added two more free throws the Marshals were leading 6-0. Colby Wiseman’s three point shot at the end of the first quarter put the Marshals up 17-10 going into the second quarter.
Edwards and Cole Nelson combined for five points to extend the Marshals lead to 22-13 in the second quarter. Shots made by Stephen Atkinson and Wiseman put the Marshals up by 12 with the score 27-15. Blake Clark connected for a field goal at the end of the second quarter to put the Marshals up 29-19 at halftime.
In the third quarter of play Atkinson added many of his 18 points for the game to the scoreboard keeping the Marshals in the lead over Calloway going into the final quarter with the score 40-31.
Calloway pulled to within nine of the Marshals in the final quarter but that would be as close as it would get. The Marshals won the 4th District Championship over Calloway County by a final score of 59-46.
Atkinson and Edwards each had double-doubles for Marshals in the win. Atkinson had 18 points, 11 rebounds and Edwards pulled down 10 rebounds and had 13 points. The Marshals shot 77.8% from the line and outrebounded Calloway County 34 to 25 with 30 of those at the defensive end.
The Marshals now move on to the Regional Tournament this week when they will play the Ballard County Bombers on Wednesday in the first round at the RSEC on the campus of Murray State University.
