Track athletes bound for state

MARSHALL COUNTY – Marshall County High Schools girls hurdling duo of Lauren Miller and Brittany Martin stole the show in the Region One class 3A track meet Saturday at Henderson County High School. Miller and Martin came in first and second respectively in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, each qualifying for the state track meet in Louisville on Saturday.

Not to be outdone by the girls, Sam Devore placed first in the 300 hundred meter hurdles and fellow hurdler Mitchel Stelter finished second in the 110 meter hurdles, both qualifying for the state meet.

The girls 4 x 400 relay team got their automatic bid for state coming in first place in that event. The relay members are Melanie McKendree, Tory Fehrenbacher, Kelsey Lawson and Lauren Miller. Also automatically qualifying for the state meet was the girls 4 x 100 relay team of Tory Fehrenbacher, Lauren Miller, Mariah McKenty and Brittany Martin with their second place performance.

Greg Marriott got his state ticket stamped with his second place finish in the 800 meter run. A second place finish in the boys 4 x 400 meter relay got them the automatic trip to state. Brandon Davis, Sam Devore, Luke Rudd and Greg Marriott make up that team.

Other track team members are very close to getting the trip to Louisville and the coaches are waiting to see where they ranked statewide which will determine other state qualifiers.

The Class 3A state track meet will be held this Saturday, June 5th, at Owsley Frazier Cardinal Park on the campus of the University of Louisville. Field events will begin at 3:00 and running events will start at 4:30.

As a team, the girls came in second place behind the team from Owensboro High School. Marshall’s boys came in fourth. Owensboro’s team also placed first on the boy’s side.
