fall in championship
to Calloway

MCCRACKEN COUNTY – Marshall County and Calloway County have met in the District softball championship game seven out of the last 10 years. Also in the past ten years the Lady Marshals and the Lady Lakers have each won five district championships a piece.

The two teams met again last week to decide another District championship. The Lady Marshals fell to Calloway County in the 2009 championship game 8-3 and hoped to redeem themselves in this year’s tournament final.

Neither team got on the board through the first two innings of play. In the top of the third inning with Taylor Meadows on second and Stephanie Helton on first, Breanne Ray stepped up to the plate and hit a triple that scored two runs for the Lady Marshals taking the lead over the Lady Lakers 2-0.

Calloway put up four runs in the fifth inning taking a 4-2 lead. The Lady Marshals, unable to score any more runs, were runners-up in the Fourth District championship game to Calloway County for the second straight year.

This week the Lady Marshals will go into the Region One tournament as the 2009 defending champions with their 2-1 victory over Health in last year’s final.
