Athletic Hall of Fame announced

DRAFFENVILLE The 2010 Marshall County Athletic Hall of Fame inductees were announced by the Athletic Foundation in a press conference at Marshall County High School Thursday.
The coach selected for induction this year is Howard Beth who coached at MCHS from 1980-2010 with an outstanding record of 793-150. Beth won 23 District Championships, 19 Regional Championships, State Runner-up in 1981 and two State Championships in 1982 and 1984. Coach Beth is the all-time winningest girls’ basketball coach in the state of Kentucky. He was inducted into the KHSAA Hall of Fame in 1994.
Jim Freeland will be inducted this year as a Contributor. Freeland came to WCBL radio station as a general manager in 1969 and elevated WCBL’s commitment to covering Marshall County sports. Jim devoted generous amounts of airtime and money to promote and cover high school athletics in Marshall County as well as his work as play-by-play announcer. Freeland purchased WCBL in 1998 and WCCK in 2000 and continued to broadcast all Marshall County football, girls and boys basketball games and most boys and girls soccer games. In addition to his play-by-play work for Marshall County games, Freeland also served in that same capacity for Murray State and UT Martin.
Two basketball teams will be inducted this year and they are the 1981 Lady Marshals State Runner-up team and the 1982 Lady Marshals State Champions. Members of the 1981 team with a 31-4 record coached by Howard Beth and Assistant Coach Diane Woolfolk are: Mitzi Birdsong, Kelly Chambers, Kim Crowell, Alicia Hall, Gaye Heikkinen, Karen Hensley, Lisa Jarrett, Tina Payne, Glenys Riley, Shelly Rogers, Julie Schaper, Laura Seay, Mary Lee Snow, Shawna Smith, Belinda Talbert and Secret Watkins.
The 1982 Lady Marshals coached by Beth and Woolfolk are: Penny Barrett, Mitzi Birdsong, Kelly Chambers, Leslie Cothran, Kim Crowell, Peggy Cummings, Staci Dick, Gaye Heikkinen, Lisa Jarrett, Daphne Lassiter, Deadra Lassiter, Carol Parker, Tina Payne, Laura Seay, Shawna Smith, Jamie White and Maggie Yopp.
This year’s player inductees are Edward “Ed” Holley, Glenn “Red “Pete” Culp, Adriane Diamond Travis, Carol Parker Hensley, Mary Taylor Cowles and Barry Goheen.
Ed Holley, who was born in 1899 and passed away October 26, 1986, grew up on a farm near Benton. Holley played professional baseball for the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburg Pirates from 1928-1934. Holley, who was a right handed pitcher, played his final game on August 8, 1934. While in the majors he earned the nickname Big Ed Holley.
“Pete” Culp was a member of the 1938 Sharpe Green Devils State Championship basketball team. Culp was high scorer in the 1938 state tournament with 54 points and named first team all-state that same year. He went on to play for Murray State where he received All-American Honorable Mention.
Adriane Diamond Travis ran track for the Lady Marshals and was the State Champion in the 400 meter run for four straight years from 1980-1983. Her time of 55.5 set in 1983 is still the 400 meter state record. Travis ran track for Indiana University and was the indoor and outdoor Big Ten champion in the 400 meters from 1985-1988 and qualified for the Olympic Trials in 1988.
Carol Parker Hensley was Miss Basketball in 1984 scoring 1,564 points for the Lady Marshals that year. Parker played on the 1982 and 1984 State Championship teams. She was a National High School Girls All-American in 1984 and KJCAA First Team All-conference in 1986. Parker played basketball at Paducah Community College from 1984-1986.
Mary Taylor Cowles was the Lady Marshals second Miss Basketball in 1987 scoring 1,947 points that season. Cowles played on the 1984 State Championship team and was the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 1987. She was also a National High School Girls All-American in 1987. Cowles played college basketball at Western Kentucky University from 1987-1991 where she is now head coach for the Toppers. She was inducted into the KHSAA Hall of Fame in 2000 and is a three-time Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year.
Barry Goheen was the 1984 and 1985 Purchase Player of the Year and first team All-State in 1985 as a Marshal. Other accomplishments included Kentucky-Indiana All Star team and Mr. Basketball Runner-up. Goheen played his college ball for Vanderbilt University from 1985-1989 where he was All-SEC first team in 1989, second team in 1988 and All-SEC Academic Team 1987-1989. Goheen became known for his game winning buzzer beater shots in high profile games with the Commodores.
This year’s Hall of Fame Weekend will begin with a golf scramble at the Kentucky Dam Village State Park on Thursday August 26th with the annual dinner and induction ceremony that evening at Marshall County High School.
The event will end with the Hall of Fame game when the Marshals host Evansville Bosse.
