Lady Marshals set pace late at home

DRAFFENVILLE– After trailing visiting Henry County, Tenn., for two quarters, the Lady Marshals forced their back into the lead in the final quarter and did not stop their pressure. Kaylin Goins led the way for Marshall County with 17 points on the night, 11 coming in the fourth quarter.

Marshall County turned the corner midway through the fourth quarter. Trailing the Lady Patriots 40-36, pressure by Goins helped Lena Bohannon to force a turnover. The Lady Marshals brought the ball down court, shuffling it to Goins under the net. Goins knocked in the basket and drew a foul for a 3-point play. Margaret Thomas followed 30 seconds later with a jumper to put Marshall in control 41-40.

The Lady Patriots would answer with a basket, but it would be their final time on the sunny side of the score board. Goins added two more from the free throw line with 2:34 remaining and then used a defensive rebound by Bohannon to go up 45-42 seconds later. Goins would add two more baskets as Marshall County held the visitors silent through final three minutes.

Marshall County had opened the contest in control, leading 12-9 at the end of the first quarter. Lady Patriot Katie VanDyke opened the second frame with a trey to tie the game at 12. Bohannon answered for Marshall County and the two teams tied the contest twice more before Henry County pulled away 25-20 in the final few minutes.

Things didn’t improve for the Lady Marshals after the break. Baskets by Cher’ron Teague and Tianna Porter stretched the visitors lead to 29-20. Marshall County would continue to battle, increasing pressure midway through the quarter. Strong coverage led to unforced turnovers that the Lady Marshals capitalized on. Michaela Hunt notched six points in the final four minutes. She put her own shot back in with two minutes remaining to pull within two points, then tied the game at 33 off a pass by Tory Fehrenbacher. Thomas hit the back end of a pair of free throws for the lead, but it was brief. Lady Patriot Illyaia McClain hit a 3-pointer in the final minute to take control 36-34.

Goins outscored the visitors 11-4 in the final frame. Thomas also notched a basket in the fourth. The two were the only Lady Marshals in double digits. Goins scored 17 to lead all scorers, while Thomas notched 11.

The visitors edged Marshall County in total rebounds 26-25. The Lady Marshals hit 21-of-52 field goals for 40 percent, all coming from inside the arc. The Lady Patriots hit 19-of-51 from the field, going 4-for-12 from 3-point range.
