DRAFFENVILLE– It was a night to celebrate the seniors at Reed Conder Gymnasium last Tuesday but the Marshals did not celebrate with a win. The 10-13 Mayfield Cardinals instead played like it was their senior night, knocking off the Marshals in the closing seconds of the game with a three point shot by Mayfield’s Brooks Heath.

Tanner Wilson got the Marshals on the board first with a three. Both teams were all square several times in the first quarter with the Marshals taking a 15-12 lead going into the second quarter.

The Marshals and Cardinals were tied at 20 when Wilson knocked down another three putting them up by three. At the end of the second, the Marshals were up 26-25 when Chase York was fouled. York made one and the bonus sending the Marshals to the locker room at half with a 28-25 lead.

In the third quarter of play the Marshals were up 42-37 when Mayfield’s Tyrese Murrell hit two in a row from the three point arc putting them up 43-42. With the score 45-42, Blake Clark fouled Trey Whitnell of Mayfield while shooting a three. Whitnell missed all three from the line. Colby Wiseman’s field goal off the board sent the Marshals into the final quarter down by one, 45-44.

Murrell added another of his six three pointers on the night for Mayfield putting them up over the Marshals at the beginning of the fourth quarter by the score 48-44. Down by just one at 49-48, Clark drew a foul and made one at the line putting the Marshals back on top 51-49. Stephen Atkinson got called for a technical foul and Murrell sunk both at the line putting the Cardinals back on top 53-51. Murrell was then called for a technical foul sending Clark to the line for the Marshals. Clark made 3 of 4 and the Marshals trailed Mayfield 55-54.

With a little more than two minutes to play, a goal by Wilson and steal and layup by Clark put the Marshals on top once again 58-55. A technical foul was called on the Marshall bench which tied things up at 58. Mayfield led 61-60 after another three by Murrell. York was fouled under the goal and made both at the line putting the Marshals up 62-61. With the clock running out, Brooks Heath of Mayfield hit a game winning three giving the Cardinals the win by a final score of 64-62.

Clark led the Marshals in scoring with 17, followed by Wilson with 14. The Marshals were nearly perfect from the free throw line making 21 of 23. Mayfield’s Murrell led his team with half of their total points with 32.
