OWENSBORO– Marshall County High Schools’ swim team competed in the KHSAA Region 1 Swimming Championships at the Owensboro Health Park on Friday and Saturday. Once again proving their “no pool, no problem” motto isn’t enough to keep them out of the Region 1 Finals on Saturday against powerhouse swim teams from Bowling Green and Owensboro.
Region 1 is the largest region in swimming in the state of Kentucky. The majority of the MCHS swimmers swam personal best times in their events on Friday and in the finals on Saturday. Marshall County qualified on Friday to swim in Saturday’s Region 1 finals in five different events.
The top 12 best times qualified for Saturday’s finals. Josh Gordon was the only swimmer to qualify in an individual event. Gordon qualified in the 10th spot in the 100 freestyle and just missed out in 13th place to qualify in the 50 freestyle. Just barely missing out on qualifying for Saturday’s finals in individual events were Sydney Beckett in the 100 and 200 freestyle, Jenna Goins in the 50 freestyle and Sarah Telle in the 100 butterfly.
Relay teams qualifying for Saturday’s finals were the boys 200 medley relay team of Nolan Park, Josh Gordon, Cale Merrick and Nick Forte, the girls 200 freestyle relay team consisting of Jenna Goins, Erika Darnell, Sarah Telle and Sydney Beckett. The boys 200 freestyle team of Josh Gordon, Reed Stewart, Cale Merrick and Nick Forte and the girls 400 freestyle relay team of Sarah Telle, Erika Darnell, Jenna Goins and Sydney Beckett.
The Regions 1’s 71 senior swimmers from 31 different Region 1 high schools were recognized at Friday’s preliminary event. Marshall County seniors recognized were Sydney Beckett, Jenna Goins, Reed Stewart, Josh Gordon, Josh Tillson and Nick Forte.
Saturday’s Region 1 finals produced personal best times in all five events in which Marshall swimmers qualified. According to Coach Trina Merrick, “Some of these times may be school records”. “We will need to go back and look through past performances, but I feel pretty certain some of them will be new school records for the swim team,” said Merrick.
The waiting game now begins for the relay teams to see if their times qualify them for the State Swim Meet to be held at the Wright Natatorium Swimming Pool on the campus of University of Louisville this Friday and Saturday.
