Marshals win third straight tournament

to Panama

DRAFFENVILLE– Marshall County boys traveled to Ohio County to play in the Ohio County High School Eagle Classic last week.

In the first match of the tournament the Marshals met the Bourbon County Colonels. The Marshals wasted no time in this one leading by as much as 12 in the first half of play. Marshall County went into the halftime break leading 42-33 over the Colonels. The Marshals put up 40 more points in the second half beating Bourbon County by 27 with a final score of 82-55.

Steven Atkinson and Andrew Edwards came up big for the Marshals both with double-doubles. Atkinson had 10 rebounds with 12 points and Edwards had 11 rebounds scoring 10 points. Chase York lead all scorers with 17 followed by Blake Clark with 13, Cole Nelson with 12 and six other Marshals putting points on the board in the contest.

Marshall County took on the Bulldogs from John Hardin High School in game two of the tournament on Tuesday. John Hardin took the quick lead in this contest but at the end of the first quarter the Marshals held a 15-13 lead. John Hardin tied things up 15-15 at the beginning of the second. Both teams battled the boards throughout the second quarter.

Tanner Wilson’s three point shot tied things up 27-27 at the end of the first half. Marshall County had a six point lead over the Bulldogs at the end of the third quarter and the fourth quarter would prove to be all Marshall County, as they slowly extended their lead. Another three by Wilson put the Marshals up 51-35 and the Marshals would go on to win this one 53-39.

Cole Nelson lead scorers with 13, Atkinson and Wilson both put up nine points and Colby Wiseman lead in rebounds with six also scoring seven points.

Playing in the championship game on Wednesday the Marshals took on the host of the tournament, the Ohio County Eagles. Marshall County got off to a slow start offensively trailing Ohio County 4-9 at the end of the first quarter. Neither team would score again until midway through the second when a Marshall field goal brought the score to 6-11.

After an Atkinson shot drawing a foul and a steal by Clark the Marshals tied things up 11-11. Marshall County went up 14-11 after a Wilson three point shot and would lead at the half, 20-19. A field goal and another three by Wilson put the Marshals up 25-19 early in the fourth. Marshall County went into the fourth quarter leading 43-32.

Clark started off the fourth with a three and the Marshals would build on their lead from there. After another Wilson three the Marshals were leading Ohio County 51-36. Ohio County rallied late but the Marshals held them off winning the championship game 57-51. Atkinson had another double-double for the tournament scoring 11 points with 12 rebounds. Blake Clark led scorers with 17 and Chase York was also in double digits with 11 points.

Marshall County improves to a perfect 8-0 and will travel to Panama City Beach December 28-30 to defend their title in the JR Arnold Marlin Classic.
