DRAFFENVILLE– A 17-7 second quarter run by Murray’s Lady Tigers put the Lady Marshals playing catch-up at home Thursday night. Marshall County would get as close as one point in the final minute before Murray pulled away with free throws for the 40-36 win.

The Lady Marshals started the contest strong, leading 8-4 at the end of the first quarter. Lena Bohannon notched a pair of baskets, while Michaela Hunt and Kaylin Goins added two more.

Murray tied the game 11-all in the second quarter after Amanda Winchester hit two from the free throw line. The teams swapped the lead briefly before Murray went on a 9-2 run to end the quarter up 21-15.

The Lady Marshals stayed with the visitors through the next two quarters, keeping within six points of the lead for most of the half. Marshall looked poised to regain the lead in the final two minutes.

Down 37-31, Goins hit a pair from the stripe, followed by a 3-point play by Margaret Thomas at the one minute mark. Thomas followed up with two free throws as Marshall trailed 37-36.

But foul trouble on defensive rebounds sent three Lady Tigers to the charity stripe in the final 40 seconds. The Lady Tigers shot 3-of-6 to stave off the rally 40-36.

With the loss, the Lady Marshals fell to 4-2 on the season and 0-1 in the district. Murray, meanwhile, improved to 4-0. The win was the first time this season the Lady Tigers failed to score more than 70 points, following wins against Reidland (74-45), Fulton Co. (74-30) and Henry Co., Tenn. (73-57).
