DRAFFENVILLE– The coaching carousel began to turn last week with Marshall County’s football program being the first stop. Scott Shelton, who replaced Mike Lawson in 2007, has resigned his position as head coach of the Marshals.

Shelton will remain at Marshall County High School as an English teacher.

The Marshals went 16-6 the final two seasons under Lawson and got off to a strong start under Shelton in 2007, advancing to the Class 6A semifinals before falling to St. Xavier. From there, the Marshals began to struggle, posting a 3-7 season in 2008 and finishing 1-9 this year. The Marshals have not been a part of the postseason since 2007.

Marshall County High School Athletic Director Jeff Stokes said the school was starting the hiring process and will be looking for the right candidate.

“We’ll have to go through the regular hiring process at this time,” Stokes said, noting that it was not an emergency situation. “It’s still early in the process right now. We’ll have to wait 30 days. If we need to take longer, we will take longer. We just want to make sure we get the right person.”

Stokes said he would be meeting with members of Shelton’s staff and the team this week. Members of the current staff will be overseeing offseason conditioning. Current coaches include Jason Fite, offensive line, Scott Pullen, running backs; Phillip Maxwell, wide receivers; Todd Anderson, running backs; Evan Merrick, linebackers; Daniel Murphy, linebackers; and Jeff Sturm, defensive backs.

Stokes said he has already received calls of interest, but stressed that process would taken as long as necessary to find the right candidate.
