| Employee injured at metal alloys plant in Calvert

CALVERT CITY Marshall County E-911 received a call for help shortly after 9 a.m. Monday morning at the Calvert City Metal Alloys plant in reference to a man who had fallen an estimated 25-50 feet.
The victim, later identified as Eddie Wayne King, of Benton, was transported to Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah.
According to reports from friends of the victim, King was being treated for neurological and orthopedic injuries sustained in the accident.
CCMA is the largest producer of silicon containing ferro alloys and inoculants in North America.
The plant uses approximately 100 megawatts of electric power to operate three Submerged Arc Electric Furnaces, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with electricity supplied by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
The furnaces produce various kinds of ferrosilicons, which combine to make more than 40 different products.
CCMA, ships over 100,000 metric tons of finished product annually from the manufacturing facility in Calvert City via barge, rail and truck.
Alloys produced at the plant are used to create a variety of products such as home furnishings (tubs, sinks and other bath fixtures), automobile parts, bridges, machinery, buildings, concrete, welding rods, tractor parts and lawn mowers.
