MCCRACKEN COUNTY – Region One tennis championships were held last week at Paducah Tilghman High School and Lone Oak.

Marshall County’s girls began play on Monday with singles matches played at Paducah Tilghman and doubles play in Lone Oak.

Summer Davis playing singles for Marshall County lost her first round match to Olivia Petter from St. Mary. Amanda Henson also lost her first match in the tournament to Lindsey Robertson from Mayfield.

The girls doubles team of Hendrickson/Sullivan lost to Murray’s Riley/Sparks doubles team. The CCA team of McMullen/Meadows defeated Marshall’s doubles team of Skees/Thompson.

The boy’s matches began on Tuesday. Hunter Estes was the only Marshal in singles play at Paducah Tilghman High School losing his match to Calloway County’s Karlo Vazquez.

The doubles team of Flenge/Cox lost their first round match to Cuhy/Coles from Mayfield. The doubles team of English/Harrington beat St. Mary’s Hunt/Smith 7-5 6-2 to advance to round two. English and Harrington lost in round two 1-6 0-6 to the team of Prawito/Shurring from Murray High.

The tennis team held their annual end of season banquet on Thursday, which was an opportunity for head coach Rick Rosa to reflect on their season.

“My group of young adults, no matter how young, treated everyone with the utmost respect,” Rosa said. “I just cannot say enough about this. It means so much for a coach to have the respect from his athletes.”

The boy’s team will lose five to graduation, which brings the total of boys graduating from the tennis program the last two years to 12.

“This now will give the younger players the opportunity to fill some important roles,” Rosa said. “On the girls side youth is a good thing. We have no seniors this year and those who played this season have gained some very valuable experience and should see rewards in the upcoming years.”
