GILBERTSVILLE – Emergency responders were dispatched Friday at 12:46 p.m. after it was reported a McCracken County teen drowned in Kentucky Lake. Robert Joseph Mattson, 19, was swimming with friends at the beach near Kentucky Dam when he went under and did not resurface.

According to chief Curt Curtner, the Marshall County Rescue Squad responded with seven rescue personnel and two boats. Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officers, Marshall County Ambulance Service, as well as East Marshall and Gilbertsville fire departments were also on scene. Using side-scan sonar units, rescue squad members were able to locate the body about 2 p.m.

Mattson was a graduate of Heath High School and was employed by Lowes in Paducah.

Funeral services will be held July 7 at Concord Worship Center. Visitation will be held Tuesday at Keeling Funeral Home.
