OWENSBORO – The Tri-County Titans of American Legion Post 236 came up one run short in a last-inning rally and dropped a 4-3 decision to Owensboro Post 9 in a baseball game at Russell Shively Park Saturday.
The game was limited to six innings because of 105-degree heat.
Five different players had singles for Post 236, including Chandler Rogers, a rising sophomore at Marshall County High School who was recently added to the senior team lineup. Rogers reached base in two at-bats, drawing a leadoff walk and scoring in the sixth inning.
The Titans went up 1-0 in the first inning when Cody Gilbert reached on an error by Owensboro shortstop Jacob Roberts, stole second and came home on an RBI single by Shubert Moffatt.
Titans righthander Devin Belt gave up only three hits and shut out the Bombers through the first four innings, but faltered in the bottom of the fifth, giving up four hits to the five batters he faced.
Jay Vincent opened the inning for the Bombers with a single. He advanced to second when Keegan Gillette grounded out to the Titans’ Zack Knight at first base and went to third on a wild pitch, then scored the tying run on Alex Bahnick’s ground ball to third.
Bahnick then scored on a double by Caleb Brand and Roberts singled to drive in Brand.
Caleb Stonecipher, in relief of Belt, gave up two hits and hit one batter, but the Titan defense prevented a fifth run from scoring when the Bombers’ Brown Lewis was tagged out at home on a throw from left fielder Devin Chambliss.
Rogers and Chambliss drew back-to-back walks to open the top of the sixth. Gilbert singled to load the bases, and Travis Gilbert’s base hit scored both Rogers and Chambliss to cut the lead to 4-3.
Cody Gilbert was tagged out at home trying to score on a ground ball by Stonecipher. Owensboro pitcher Lewis hit Phillips to load the bases with two outs but got Belt to ground out to short, ending the game.
Four games remain on the schedule before the District 1 tournament begins July 23 in Mayfield. Dyersburg, Tenn., Post 30 is scheduled to visit Miller Park today at 6 p.m. and the Titans travel to Paducah to meet Post 31 Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Brooks Stadium.
Games next week are against Mayfield Post 26 at Graves County High School on Tuesday and at home against Lyon County Post 68 Wednesday.
