After losing three blowouts and dropping three close decision, the Titans of William A. Doyle Post 236 broke into the victory column in a big way lst week.
The Titans whipped host Graves County 13-2 and 9-0 in an American Legion junior baseball double-header at the Eagles’ field on Thursday.
Coach Josh Inglish’s pitching staff did a stellar job in two short games, allowing only two hits in both contests.
However, Inglish wants his pitchers to improve their control.
“My only concern with our pitching is that we walk a lot of batters,” he said. “That’s really killed us in the past. That’s something we’re really going to have to work on.
Inglish acknowledged that sometimes young pitchers bear down and try too hard to be precise, instead of just throwing strikes and letting the batters put the ball in play.
“I think at times they do” try too hard, he said. “They start aiming the ball.”
They also need to develop their emotional control, Inglish said, and not let a batter’s success or an umpire’s call cause them to get upseet.
“If you’re not getting a call, you’ve got to forget about it,” Inglish said. “If you start pouting, the umpire is never going to give you a call.”
On offense, the Titans rapped out 17 hits, including four doubles.
The visitors had big first-inning production to get the two games off to strong starts and they kept up the pace against the Eagles.
THIS WEEK: Post 236 is at Paducah for a game against Post 31. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Newburgh, Indiana, visits for a double-header slated to begin at 1 p.m.
One more game is on the schedule, a July 8 home double-header against Paducah.
Home games are at Mike Miller Park in Draffenville.
