DRAFFENVILLE – The Tri-County Titans, American Legion Post 236’s senior (19-under) baseball team, finishes regular season play tonight with a game against Lyon County Post 68.
The game will start at 6 p.m. at Mike Miller Park.
The Titans were scheduled to play at Mayfield against the Post 126 team Tuesday night.
Going into the final week of the regular season, the team had a 3-19 record. One of the wins came against Post 68, by a 10-6 score, at Eddyville June 20.
The team lost one close decision and suffered a mercy-rule blowout in two games last week.
Travis Gilbert pitched eight shutout innings, striking out 10 Dyersburg batters, but the Tri-County Titans lost a 1-0 decision to the Northwest Tennessee Blazers in American Legion baseball at Mike Miller Park Tuesday.
In a second game last week, the Titans fell 22-1 to Paducah Post 31.
Gilbert scattered six Blazer hits and got out of an eighth-inning jam when he struck out shortstop Ethan Mansfield with the bases loaded.
Gilbert had walked Dyersburg third baseman John Morris on four pitches and gave up back-to-back singles to Tyler Jackson and Matt Smith, but settled down and got defensive help to keep the scoreless tie going.
But after the Titans came up empty in the bottom of the frame, Blazers catcher Beau Brooks doubled to right field and scored on another extra-base hit by Seth King. King was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double to end the inning.
The Blazers made the one-run lead hold up. King got Caleb Stonecipher to fly to left, walked Zack Knight and then got Josh Rodgers and Devin Chambliss on consecutive ground balls that ended up as fielder’s choice outs at second base.
King went the distance for Dyersburg, giving up only three hits and three walks. Gilbert, Devin Belt and Brenden Phillips each had singles for the Titans.
At Brooks Stadium Wednesday, Post 31 took a 2-0 lead after the first inning and then went on a rampage, scoring five runs in the second, nine in the third and six in the fourth before Tri-County managed a single run in the top of the fifth.
The Titans took a 3-19 record into this week’s action, with a game against Mayfield Post 26 scheduled for Tuesday at Graves County High School and the regular-season finale tonight against Lyon County Post 68 at Mike Miller Park at 6 p.m.
The District 1 tournament, with Tri-County, Lyon County, Paducah and Mayfield, begins Monday at Graves County.
