You may or may not have heard about them, but a new fitness run is sweeping the nation and leaving a muddy trail. “Mud-runs” are a fun, running race, full of various obstacles and loads of mud.

This year Benton will host its first Muddy event, MUDicine Run, to benefit the new Marshall County Free Clinic. “You get to be a kid again and play in the mud” Kristen David, MUDicine coordinator said. “This event is for the youth and adults, athletes and non-athletes, “ she explained.

When the fundraising committee for the Free Clinic talked about creating a 5K, David thought this would be perfect. “I participated in one before in a bigger city and I thought it would be really neat for Marshall County. We’re all really excited about it.” she said.

The MUDicine run is a team competition. A two person team costs $65 and a four person team costs $125. Teams will start and finish the race together.

The race will kick off on October 20 at 9:00 a.m. and a group of teams will go out in “waves”. Each team will be timed and prizes will be awarded for the fastest time, as well as for the best costume. Some of the obstacles for this race include a slip’n slide, a tunnel crawl and a big mud pit.

The race will be close to a 5K in distance but there will also be a one mile fun-run with muddy obstacles for children and for those who want to walk. Food will be provided afterward and a band will be playing as well.

“The atmosphere is just great,” David said, “You fall down and laugh a ton, everyone has a great time and it’s for a really good cause.”

Registration forms can be picked up at several locations around the county or you can email mudicinerun@gmail.com. They also have a facebook page, www.facebook.com/MUDicinerun. Early registration deadline is September 24. Remember, your clothes will get muddy and excessively baggy clothes will weigh you down or could possibly fall off. Also, tie shoes tight or duct tape them.
