From ghoulies and ghosties

Add to the list of gruesome “ghoulies and ghosties” a line of fiendish-sounding sodas that you might bump into on Halloween. That is, if you go to the Hitching Post in Aurora for a soda tasting on Oct. 31.

This one, however, is not your ordinary soda tasting, not like the ones proprietors Su Festen and husband Tom Trenkle hosted throughout the summer.

And whereas the other tastings cost $5 [for the souvenir shot glass], this one is free. “There is no charge,” Festen said. “We wanted to give something back to the community.” And they will, in a whimsical sort of way.

The tastings started out as an idea Festen had after attending a wine tasting in Paris, Tenn. “We’re a dry county, so I thought why not sodas?” Their original inventory of 80 varieties of sodas, all in glass bottles, has grown to 150, Festen said, including the line of “totally gross sodas” bottled by Avery’s Beverages, of New Britain, Conn.

There are seven flavors to choose from:

Zombie Brain [a red soda]

Toxic Slime [blue]

Dog Drool [pink]

Kittle Piddle [yellow, of course]

Swamp Water [“sort of a green/brownish green”]

Bug Barf [green]

and the piece de resistance—purple Monster Mucus.

Despite their names and colors, Festen said the sodas are quite tasty. Her favorite? “Dog Drool is delicious,” said the cat owner. Among their not-so-gross sodas, the number one seller is the Butterscotch Root Beer--watch out, Snoopy!--followed by Lemmy Lemonade. “It’s a sparkling lemonade and so good,” she said.

The tasting will be from 4 to 7 p.m. and will help close out the season for the Hitching Post & Old Country Store. The store, which has no heating, will close on Nov. 2, and the Hitching Post, Nov. 17.

They may keep the Hitching Post open for a few weekends after that, Festen said, “depending on the weather.” Hours are changing from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Festen said, due to the days getting shorter.

Festen pointed out that there were many other activities occurring in Aurora on Halloween. “Trunk or treat” is planned for both the Aurora Baptist Church and, in the Aurora Community Park, the Firemen’s Auxiliary. There will also be a party at the Aurora-Ross Fire Department.

No word yet on whether any of these other venues will be brave enough to serve Monster Mucus.
