A Murray man is being held in the Marshall County Detention Center following a crash on Thanksgiving morning that killed 23-year old Megean McCoy of Murray.
The accident happened at around 5:30 a.m. Thanksgiving day on U.S. Hwy 80 near Aurora. McCoy was traveling westbound when she was struck by Jeffrey Nelson, 48, of Murray, who was traveling in the wrong lane.
Deputy Marshall County Coroner Barry Taylor pronounced McCoy dead at the scene.
Marshall County deputies conducted field sobriety tests on Nelson, then took him to Marshall County Hospital for blood samples. He was charged with manslaughter and operating a vehicle under the influence.
Nelson is being held on $100,000 cash bond.
McCoy is the mother of two young daughters, ages 18 months and 3 years. She was on her way to work at the Draffenville McDonald’s when the accident occurred.
Peter Hermann, owner of the McDonald’s where McCoy worked, called the accident “absolutely tragic.” He has established a fund at CFSB for donations. Contributions may be made at any CFSB branch. The restaurant is also accepting donations of clothing for the children. Sizes needed are 18 months and 3 toddler girls items.
