DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County will take a 3-1 record into its Slugfest tournament, a two-day event featuring one day of pool play among 10 participating teams followed by a one-day, single-elimination championship.

Teams competing in the tourney include defending state champion Allen County-Scottsville, which defeated Louisville Ballard last year to complete a 41-4 season.

The Lady Patriots of coach Richard Roberts already have 12 games under their belts, and have won 11 of them. Assumption took a 2-1 win March 24.

It’s not unusual for high-profile teams such as the reigning state champs to come to Marshall County, Lady Marshals coach Patricia Greer said, and not just from the Commonwealth.

“We always pull high-quality teams,” she said. “Several of the teams that have played here are ranked at the top in their states.”

This year’s field includes Carbondale, Goreville and Massac County from Illinois.

Other Kentucky teams in the field include Ballard Memorial, Covington Holmes, Franklin-Simpson, Grayson County and Union County.

Games will be played at the MCHS field and at Mike Miller Park’s No. 1 and No. 2 fields.

“It’s something our kids look forward to,” Greer said of the event, which is in its fifth year.

“Our fields are some of the best around. We love to bring people in to show them off. Michael Cross does a great job preparing and maintaining the grounds.”

The Lady Marshals won six straight games in last year’s Slugfest, defeating Goreville, Muhlenberg County, Waverly, Tenn., Martin (Tenn.) Westview, Dawson Springs and Hopkinsville.

The Lady Marshals open the event with a matchup at 2 p.m. Friday at the MCHS field.

Other pool play games at the Lady Marshals’ diamond will pit Franklin-Simpson against Union County at 3:30, Marshall County versus Grayson County at 5, and Grayson versus Goreville at 6:30.

On Miller Park Field No. 1, Union County squares off with Massac at 5 p.m., then Massac meets Ballard Memorial at 6:30 and Ballard plays Holmes in the nightcap at 8.

On Miller Park No. 2, Carbondale plays Holmes at 5 p.m. And then plays Franklin-Simpson at 6:30.

On Saturday, bracket play begins at all three parks.
