DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County’s boys’ soccer team opens regular season play today with a visit to Lone Oak.

Coach Andy Pagel’s team won an easy scrimmage victory over St. Mary two weeks ago but absorbed a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Fort Campbell in a second scrimmage last week.

“It was good for us,” Pagel said of the reality check. “We got down early, which forced us to play from behind. We had a chance to go up on a PK and missed, but they took the ball downfield and scored quickly, so we were down again.

“We nearly came back.”

Pagel said his relatively young team rememered an easy win over Fort Campbell last year.

“But with Fort Campbell and their transfers from year to year, you never know what they’ll have,” he said. “This year, they are legitimate, technically, tactically, and physically.”

The senior-dominated Falcons will be a tough team in the Second Region, Pagel said.

“We did not want to lose, obviously, but we looked at it for what it was: a scrimmage to help us find issues we need to fix.”
