Joe Castillo will be visiting Marshall County and presenting his “SandStory” on the night of October 19. Castillo and his story are completely unique and produce a very inspirational and motivational message.

Castillo’s father, who has been said to have been an amazing story teller, passed away when he was 15 and one of the last messages he told Castillo was the he should become an artist. After entering commercial art and working in advertising for 20 years, he went back to school and earned his M.A. in Biblical Studies and M. Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary.

A few more years passed and he began his “WordStory” and “ArtStory” which are presentations that use intricately crafted illustrations, drawn before audiences to teach life lessons. His son had sent him a stop-motion photography video of a sand story.

“Sand art isn’t new by any means, I just found a new way to present it,” Castillo said. After creating his light box, projector and about four months of practicing his “SandStories” he presented his first story to his church nearly seven years ago.

Since then his videos appeared on YouTube and last year Castillo became a finalist on NBC’s American’s Got Talent. “It has been an amazing journey. I’ve been to 23 countries and 40 states. My wife, Cindy, and I added it up and we were on the road for 229 days last year,” Castillo said.

Watch Joe Castillo’s SandStory at the Kenneth Shadowen Performing Arts Center at the Marshall County High School at 7 p.m. on Oct. 19. “It’s a fabulous show and is for such a worthy cause,” Castillo explained, “I really am excited about being able to be a part of this wonderful fundraiser for the Arts Center.”

Tickets are on sale for $25 and $12.50 for children under 12. The event is hosted by The Marshall County Arts Commission. Tickets may be purchased at, Benton City Hall, Marshall County Tourism or Calvert City Public Library.
