DRAFFENVILLE – Kaitlyn York’s walk-off, three-run home run lifted Marshall County to a come-from-behind fastpitch softball victory over Graves County Friday night, the highlight of a 4-2 start to the season for the Lady Marshals.

“I think we could have very easily gone 5-1,” coach Kara Hamby said.

In back-to-back losses Friday night and Saturday in the Marshall County Slugfest tournament, “we didn’t exactly come out alive,” Hamby said.

After erasing a Graves County lead that started out 11-0 and grew to 13-1, the Marshals fell 5-3 to Union County later Friday night and then, in their first game Saturday, dropped a 7-3 decision to Butler County.

They ended the tourney with a 14-4 whipping of Vienna, Ill., Saturday afternoon.

“I told the girls, ‘I kind of wanted to yell at y’all, and give you a hug at the same time,” Hamby said. “It was such a roller-coaster of emotions.”

Marshall County rolled to an easy win behind the pitching of Brianna Gibbs and 21-hit attack Saturday afternoon.

Abby Fiessinger was 3-for-4 with three RBI and Caitlyn York and Chaney Stearns were 2-for-4 with two RBI apiece.

Gibbs scattered five hits and walked only one.

Earlier Saturday, Butler County pitcher Kassie Phelps gave up 11 hits but the defense held the Lady Marshals to only 3 as the Lady Bears took the win.

Abby Fiessinger had three hits and Hailey Trexler, Caitlyn Yok and Lexee Miller all had two hits, as Marshall County pounded out eight base hits to Butler County’s five.

But for the second game in a row, the baserunners were too often left on base at inning’s end.

York, Fiessinger and Kenslie Cross drove in the Marshall runs.

Two runs in each of the first two innings proved all the Bravettes would need.

The Lady Marshals got three runs in the third inning, but were unable to plate a tying run, and Union County added an insurance run in the fourth.

Abby Fiessinger, Chaney Stearns and Kenslie Cross each had two hits and an RBI for Marshall County.

The Lady Marshals got three more hits than Union County, but could not turn them into runs.

York, Abby Fiessinger and Chaney Stearns all had three hits for the Lady Marshals, who totaled 18 base hits.

Graves County had 16, but was blanked over the last two innings.
