GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. – Micah Chessor and Austin Maurod of Reidland were the winners in a tournament hosted Saturday by the Marshall County High School Bass Club on Kentucky Lake.

The winners’ catch measured 27 pounds, 10 ounces.

Bracken Robinson and Dillion Starks of Calloway County were second with a 27-pound, four-ounce catch, and Cameron Lynn and Casey White of Marshall County were third at 15 pounds, 10 ounces.

The tournament was the first of five scheduled in March, April and May for students representing area high schools. Fishing teams launched out of Kentucky Dam Marina.

Ninety-eight students from 14 high schools participated. Tournament directors paired some individuals from different schools to ensure everybody had a chance to participate, with two students per boat in 49 boats.

Some participants traveled some five hours from Rockcastle County in eastern Kentucky to participate.

“We were able to help them with a free night’s lodging from Ken Bar Inn,” said Nicole Thomas, parent sponsor of the MCHS Bass Club.

The top three teams received trophies and prize packages donated by the Army National Guard, plus rain suits, die-cast model boats, tool kits, gift certificates from Domino’s and Pizza Hut, Berkley Fishing rods and fishing line.

“Thank you to all the boat captains that volunteered their time to take the kids fishing,” Thomas said, noting that adult operators are required for these event. “Without the boat captains, high school fishing would not be possible.”

The next tournament is Saturday at Crab Orchard Lake near Marion, Ill. Anna-Jonesboro High School is the host school.
