Ray’s walk-off HR beats Lone Oak, opens 3-win week

DRAFFENVILLE – A three-run, walk-off home run by junior third baseman Buzz Ray lifted Marshall County to a 5-4 victory over visiting Lone Oak Tuesday, the first of three home victories for the Lady Marshals last week.

Marshall County improved to 7-3 with the trio of wins and headed into a busy week, with a Thursday contest at Christian County followed by a hectic schedule in the Greenwood Border Battle in Bowling Green Friday and Saturday.

The fourth annual event is hosted by the Greenwood Lady Gators.

Thursday’s game against Christian County in Hopkinsville will pit the Lady Marshals against the state’s fifth-ranked team, an 11-2 squad that handed Marshall its first loss this season in a 12-0 decision March 27 in Draffenville.

Pool play begins Friday in the Border Battle, with games to be played at Buchanon Park and the Western Kentucky University intramural fields at 6 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Area teams in the tournament include MC rivals Calloway County and Graves County.

Other Kentucky teams in the tournament include Greenwood, Larue County, Apollo, Meade County, Glasgow, Louisville Ballard, Louisville Christian Academy, Bowling Green, Barren County, Henderson County, Muhlenberg County, Franklin County, Franklin-Simpson, Warren Central and Butler County.

Entries from Tennessee include Friendship Christian Academy of Lebanon, Knoxville Central, Bolton, East Robertson and Columbia Academy.

Mater Dei of Evansville, Ind., rounds out the field.

Lady Marshals games include a matchup with Glasgow at 9 p.m. Friday and a game against Louisville Ballard at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Other opponents and times will be determined as the tournament progresses.

Lone Oak 4

DRAFFENVILLE – Five innings of shutout pitching by Toni Fehrenbacher were undone by a three-run outburst by Lone Oak in the sixth inning that put the Lady Flash on top 3-1. After a scoreless bottom of the inning, Lone Oak pushed across another run to make it 4-1 in the top of the seventh.

Fehrenbacher opened the last-chance inning with a double, but the Taylor Riley flied to right field and Lexee Miller’s short fly ball left Marshall with only one more out.

Mallory Young rapped a single off Lone Oak eighth-grade pitcher Jenny Chapman, moving Fehrenbacher to third, and Shelby Tyree’s single drove in Fehrenbacher and made it 4-2.

Buzz Ray connected for her first home run of the year to steal the victory.

The Lady Marshals scored in the fourth when Hailey Harrell reached on error and then came home on another Lone Oak miscue.

Lone Oak’s sixth-inning scores came on two hits, a walk and three MC errors.

DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County went ahead in the bottom of the first inning Thursday when Shelby Tyree drew a walk and scored on Abby Fiessinger’s RBI single.

The Lady Marshals added an insurance run in the fifth. Buzz Ray singled and scored on Allee Moore’s double.

Tony Fehrenbacher scattered four Lady Eagle hits in winning her seventh game against three losses.

DRAFFENVILLE – The Lady Marshals broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning, then ended Friday’s game one inning early under the mercy rule with four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Kaitlyn York’s solo home run put the Lady Marshals in front in the bottom of the second inning. Abby Fiessinger popped a two-run shot to account for two of the go-ahead runs in the third and Allee Moore had a two-run shot in the fifth.

Buzz Ray was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and three RBIs. Shelby Tyree was 3-for-4 with a double. Mallory Young and Fiessinger were 2-for-4 and York was 2-for-3.
