The Marshall County soccer Marshals started the season on a bright note with a decisive victory at home, but then District 2 rival Calloway County rained on their parade.

Actually, the Lakers didn’t so much provide the rain as they benefited from it, roaring back on Saturday afternoon to take a 2-1 victory in a match that began on Friday but was interrupted by a thunderstorm.

Marshall County held a 1-0 lead when the match was stopped Friday.

The Marshals opened this week’s play Monday at Mayfield and return home today to take on Gravs County at Colburn Stadium.

The varsity match is scheduled to begin a 7 p.m.

MCHS 2, Lone Oak 0

The Marshals were businesslike in the first half, jumping out to a 1-0 lead on Nathan Solomon’s goal at the 14-minute mark.

Seven minutes later, it was 2-0 as Solomon got the assist on a David Penney goal.

Hayden Evans assisted on the first goal, taking a long diagonal ball from Brock Herndon and and directing it on to Solomon.

“We were very efficient offensively in the first half,” coach Andy Pagel said. “We were good in the second half as well but squandered some easy chances and allowed them to hang around.”

Keeper Austin Droke had six saves for the Marshals, who outshot Lone Oak 16-9.

“It was a good opener,” Pagel said. “Lone Oak had us worried with their returning experience and late postseason success.”

Calloway 2, MCHS 1

The Marshals resumed play Saturday afternoon with a corner kick and a one-goal lead, but saw Calloway tie the score on a penalty kick early in the second period.

The two teams battled on even terms until about five minutes to go, when Calloway got the winning goal by Devon Warmack.
