MADISONVILLE – The Lady Marshals basketball team has won a Christmas holiday tournament title in each of the past two years.
They’ll have to wait until this week’s visit to the Marlin Christmas Classic in Panama City Beach, Fla., or possibly even later, to see if they can extend that streak.
The championship of the Lady Storm United Mine Workers of America Classic was called off at about 9 p.m. because of a power outage, believed to be caused by the thunderstorms that swept through the region, at the Hopkins County Central gym.
The third-place game between St. Mary and Caldwell County was canceled.
Marshall County Joseph Simmons said he and Franklin-Simpson coach Joshua Matthews discussed the possibility of a rescheduled game rather than a cancelation, with a tentative date of Jan. 18.
“It might be at Hopkins County Central, it might be at Madisonville-North Hopkins,” Simmons said. “We both want to play it on a neutral court.”
They will play this week in the Marlin Classic at Arnold High School in Florida, where the 2010-2011 team won the championship.
At Madisonville Saturday, Franklin-Simpson advanced by defeating St. Mary 42-34 while Marshall County beat Caldwell County 54-45 in semifinal action earlier in the day, before the power outage. Marshall County is off to a perfect 7-0 start to the season.
On Friday, Marshall County advanced with a come-from-behind win over Owensboro, while Franklin-Simpson defeated Union County.
The Lady Marshals won six out of seven Christmas tournament games last season, going 4-0 and winning the championship of the St. Francis Merv Lopes Hoops Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. They also won two out of three games in the Dairy Queen Classic in Owensboro.
In December 2011, they were 1-2 in the Gateway Holiday Tourna, emt at Montgomery County High School in Mount Sterling, Ky., but earlier in the break had won their own Lady Marshal Classic at home, winning four games.
The 2010-2011 team won the title in the Marlin Christmas Classic at Panama City Beach, Fla., after going 2-2 in the Lady Bomber Classic at Ballard Memorial earlier in the holiday.

The Lady Marshals overcame a stellar performance by Owensboro senior Jordin Crabtree, a 7-point second-half deficit and frigid (37 percent) free-throw shooting to defeat the Lady Devils and run their unbeaten streak to 5-0 Friday night.
Crabtree had 17 points, and seemed to be the only player who could consistently create offense. But the Lady Marshals came alive in the final period, outscoring Owensboro 18-7 to win going away.
Allie York had 14 points to lead Marshall County. She and Crabtree were the only players to score in double figures, but Marshall County’s Alyssa Barnard had nine points, including a 3-point basket that swished the net from the left corner.
The shot came with just over three minutes to go and Marshall County clinging to a one-point lead, 36-35.
That was part of a 9-0 run that effectively put the game away, although the Lady Marshals continued to struggle at the free-throw line, hitting only 4-for-10 in the final two minutes of play.
