The Marshall County Board of Education last week took the first step to prohibit the use of tobacco products on all school-owned and operated property including at outdoor athletic events.
The first reading of a new policy prohibiting the use of all tobacco products including vapor paraphernalia was heard by the school board at last Tuesday’s meeting.
Marshall County Schools Superintendent Trent Lovett said the board began discussions toward a complete ban on tobacco products last spring.
Members of the Marshall County School Board are expected to approve the second reading of the policy at the August meeting and the ban will take effect immediately, according to Lovett.
“As a learning institution and a public entity, we feel we need to listen to research that deals with the hazards of tobacco, along with second-hand smoke,” Lovett said.
State officials have been advocating a complete ban on the use of tobacco products on school-owned property during sporting events. Marshall County joins a growing number of school systems adopting the policy.
According to Lovett signage will be placed on entrances to athletic facilities across the county. Public address announcements will also be made to remind visitors to the facilities of the policy.
Visitors found to be in violation of the tobacco-ban will be asked to stop using the product and asked to leave school property if non-compliant.
Lovett said students of the school system found to be in violation will be dealt with through regular disciplinary procedures.
