GILBERTSVILLE – A Gilbertsville man died in a two vehicle crash Saturday.

According to a Marshall County Sheriff’s Department press release, deputies responded to a call around 1 p.m. The accident happened on U.S. 68 between Big Bear Highway and Dunn Cemetery Road.

Sheriff Kevin Byars said Walter L. Smith, 69, Benton, lost consciousness due to a medical situation. He was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac.

Smith went off the right side of the road, hit a driveway and returned to the roadway. After crossing the centerline, he struck a Ford F-350 driven by Andrew D. Beard, 37, Gilbertsville.

Beard fell off the right side of the road and overturned. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith was treated and released at Marshall County Hospital, according to the hospital’s medical records department.

The sheriff’s department press release reported both drivers were wearing seat belts. An investigation is continuing.

Deputies were assisted by the Fairdealing-Olive Fire Department, the Palma-Briensburg Fire Department, Marshall County EMS and the Marshall County Coroner’s Office.
