Groundbreaking ceremonies were held yesterday on the long-awaited Children's Art Center on Elm Street between 12th and 13th in Benton. Community leaders,  alongside 15 children representing each of the county's schools, took the ceremonial first dig.

The group has been working for over a year and a half toward the 6,800-square-foot structure, which will house both performing and visual arts. Currently, the arts commission has to find available venues, such as the Kenneth Shadowen Performing Arts Center for programming.

The project is a joint effort of the City of Benton, which received a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant, and the Marshall County Arts Commission.

Cleaver Construction of Murray is the contractor for the $845,000 project.
