Think of soap and a few brand names come immediately to mind - Dove, Ivory and Zest.
That’s not the case, however, for Jake and Chase Austin of Calvert City who own Clean Beans Soap Company. They immediately think of their homemade brand of organic soap.
Jake became interested in the craft of soap making after watching Fight Club, a popular movie starring Brad Pitt who was a soap maker by trade. From there, he watched a soap making demonstration while attending a craft show at Kentucky Dam Village and thought, “Why not try it?”
After some successful batches of soap, Chase joined in and it became a part-time job for the brothers.
The soap making business complements their lawn care business perfectly because they can concentrate on it when the lawn care business winds down for the season.
“We can’t do much in the winter with the lawn business and decided to try making soap. It’s kind of nice because it’s seasonal. By the time winter comes around we’re sold out,” said Jake.
The brothers say the lawn business also complements the soap making business in other ways, as well.
“If we are mowing and see somebody has a ton of fresh rosemary, we’ll get it from them with permission, of course,” said Jake.
Clean Beans soap is all natural and plant-based. The brothers use vegetable fat, as opposed to animal fat used in most name brands.
“We have about 10-15 different scents, but our most popular is probably the unscented. It’s made with oats and honey and is really good for sensitive skin,” said Jake.
They also sell Pink Berry, a variety made with cherry and vanilla that is popular in spas.
The soap making process is lengthy and requires care, explained Jake.
“I did a lot of research beforehand,” he said. “This stuff can be pretty dangerous. We always mix the lye outside. If it’s done wrong, it will cause an explosion.” He said it takes about an hour to make a batch and it has to set for at least 24 hours before it’s ready for use.
The upcoming holiday season will find the brothers making gift baskets that include homemade body scrub and lip balm.
Clean Beans Soap Company products can be purchased locally at Basket Case Florist and Gifts in Calvert City. The products are also sold at Total Rejuvenation Spa in Paducah.
