MURRAY – Marshall County figured to get a challenge in the District 4 baseball tournament championship game.

A sweep of two regular season games was accomplished via a 3-1 win and a 5-0 victory, neither decision particularly decisive.

The Lakers proved to be every bit as tough as expected on May 20, playing as the visiting team on their home field against top-seeded Marshall County May 20.

The Marshals got four runs in the bottom of the second inning and held off a late Calloway rally to clinch the district title.

Righthander Dylan Givens struck out eight and walked only one, scattering five hits and surrendering one run, in six innings.

The Marshals parlayed seven singles, four walks and two Laker errors into their four runs.

The runs all came in the bottom of the second, when Marshall County got four singles, two walks and a sacrifice bunt.

Mason Wooten and Cody Clark had two of the singles, and Chandler Rogers walked to load the bases.

Then Givens singled to drive in Wooten and give the Marshals a lead they would never surrender.

Dalton Morton drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Clark, and Chase Bright and Hunter Jaco had hits to make it 4-0.

The Lakers, shut out by Givens through five frames, got a run in the sixth and staged a last-gasp rally that cut the deficit to two runs and loaded the bases against reliever Austin Johnson.

But the hard-throwing Johnson got a strikeout to put down the rally.

Clark was 2-for-3 and Chase Bright 2-for-4. Givens was 1-for-2.

Bright, Hunter Jaco and Givens each had an RBI, and Dalton Morton drove in a run with a ground-ball out.
