Marshall County absorbed its first loss of the young season against a strong Ohio County team and bounced back with a win over Madisonville-North Hopkins in two games last week.
On Tuesday, Ohio County won its fourth straight and 24th in the last 25 games, dating from last season when the Eagles posted a 29-3 mark in a season that ended in the Third Region tournament against Apollo.
They came out strong on Friday in the Messenger Tip-Off Classic at Madisonville on the Maroons’ home court, running out to a 21-8 lead after one quarter but then had to hang on to hold off a challenge from the home team.
The Marshals are on the road tonight at Carlisle County and are back home on Friday in the Fourth District contest with Murray in their final game before Christmas tournament action gets under way.
A big early lead melted in the second quarter as both teams struggled to put points on the board in the first four minutes. Madisonville picked up three field goals to close to 21-14 before Chase Clark answered with Marshall County’s first points of the period at the midway point.
That would turn out to be the only points of the quarter for the Marshals, who led by only five, 23-18, at intermission.
Clark opened the third period with a three-point field goal, then added two free throws to push the gap back to double figures, but still Madisonville was not finished.
The Maroons hit three of six shots from three-point range to stay too close for comfort until Marshall County finally pulled away in the final two minutes for the 10-point margin of victory.
Clark led the way with 19 points. Austin Rentfrow, a 6-7 junior center, had a strong game inside with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
Iran White, with 11 points, was the only Maroon to reach double figures. Ross Thomas added seven points and pulled down 13 rebounds for Madisonville.
There were plenty of rebounds to be had. Madisonville shot only 29.8 percent for the game and Marshall County 38.8, including only one of 11 from three-point range.

At Hartford on Tuesday night, Ohio County pulled away in the final minutes for a double-figures win in what was a much closer contest. The Marshals led 28-27 at halftime and trailed by only two, 42-40, after three periods.
The Marshals were in contention until the final minutes. But Ohio County’s 25 fourth-quarter points eventually enabled them to roll to their third straight win. Marshall County took its first loss after opening the season with three victories.
The Eagles helped their cause with 80 percent free throw shooting, connecting on 20 of 25. The Marshals hit 12 of 19 for 63 percent.
Chase Clark was the game’s leading scorer with 20 for the Marshals. Casey White added 10.
All five starters for the Eagles scored in double figures, with only two points coming from the Ohio County bench. Trevor Lewis had 19, Trent Hall 14, William Morse 12 and Preston Lambrich and Jonathan Wortham 10 apiece.
Morse also pulled down 10 rebounds for Ohio County. White and Austin Rentfrow had six rebounds apiece for Marshall County.
