OWENSBORO – The beat goes on for Marshall County’s cross country team, which is sending representatives to the state meet for the 12th straight year.

The Marshals, led by a seventh-place finish by senior Kyle Barry, finished fourth among nine teams in Saturday’s Class 3A, Region 1 meet at Panther Creek Park, advancing as a unit to the state meet at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

Lady Marshals freshman Rachel Northcutt also qualified as an individual with her performance in the girls’ 5-kilometer region race.

Powerhouse Daviess County took first place in both boys’ and girls’ competition. The boys’ victory was a narrow one, 38 points to 40, over host Apollo.

Owensboro was third with 111 points to Marshall County’s 126.

Chase Geary of Muhlenberg County took first place among the 63 boys who competed Saturday. He ran the hilly Panther Creek Park course in 16 minutes, 46.70 seconds, besting Brad Sikes of Daviess County. Sikes was timed at 16:53.20.

Barry was the next finisher not wearing the red of Daviess County or the blue of Apollo. He turned three laps around the 1.67-kilometer course in 17:18.30.

That was six seconds slower than his time two weeks ago in the Apollo Invitational at the Panther Creek Park course. Barry finished second to Sikes in that race.

T.J. Lampkin was the next-highest finisher for Marshall County. He ran 18th at 18:08.00.

Both Barry and Lampkin qualified as individuals for the state meet last year. Barry will be competing in the final meet for the fourth year in a row.

Others in the Marshal contingent were paced by Mark Gallagher, who finished 25th. Others were Jake Devore, 36th; Nick Gibson, 39th; Hunter Hillman, 41st; and Colton Holstead, 49th.
