Grief counselors were at Marshall County High School this morning as students began to learn of the death of a fellow classmate in an accident last night.

Zackery R. Smalley, 19, of Benton died after he fell from a moving car at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday according to the Marshall County Sheriff's Department.

Smalley was a passenger in the back seat of a Mitsubishi Eclipse traveling on Wadesboro Road North when he attempted to climb out of the car's sunroof, according to Sgt. Eddie McGuire.

The car's driver, 19-year-old Logan G. McNeely of Benton, and a front seat passenger, Robert B. Davis, 19, of Benton, both said they tried to talk Smalley out of climbing through the sunroof, McGuire reported.

According to Sheriff's Department release, McNeely's vision became blocked by Smalley's leg and he swerved causing Smalley to fall from the car onto the roadway on Wadesboro Road North between Tom Lane Road and Houser Road.

After falling, Smalley was unresponsive and witnesses and emergency medical personnel were unable to revive him, McGuire reported.

The Marshall County Sheriff's Department collision reconstructionist continues to investigate.

The Sheriff’s office was assisted by the Kentucky State Police, ENO and Harvey Brewers volunteer fire departments along with Marshall County EMS and the Marshall County Coroner’s Office.

Smalley was a senior at Marshall County High School.
