OWENSBORO – The Lady Marshal volleyball team posted a runner-up finish in the Apollo Invitational tournament, winning three straight matches before falling to champion Green County 2-0 Saturday.
After dropping a 2-1 decision to Edmonson County in Friday pool play, Marshall County bounced back to defeat Calloway County 2-0, topped Owensboro 2-1 and then beat Ballard Memorial 2-0 to advance against Green County.
In the final game, the Lady Dragons won the first game 25-20 and clinched the championship with a 25-12 decision in the second game.
“Green County is really good,” Lady Marshals coach Dan Langhi said. “We just ran out of gas there.”
Earlier, though, the Lady Marshals showed plenty of fight, with straight-set wins over District 4 rival Calloway and Region 1 opponent Ballard Memorial and the comeback from a 1-0 deficit to beat Owensboro.
The Ballard match also represented a reversal of the Lady Marshals’ 3-1 loss to the Lady Bombers in their regular season opener Thursday night at the MCHS auxiliary gym.
The team had some opening-night jitters against Ballard on Thursday, with a number of missed serves.
In addition, “We didn’t hit the ball very well when we got it to our hitters,” Langhi said.
That trend carried over into the Edmonson County game at Owensboro, Langhi said, but Marshall still pushed Edmonson, falling 26-24, 23-25, 15-8.
After that, Langhi said, the team settled down and played well the rest of the way. Calloway fell in a close match 25-18, 25-23 and then Owensboro, after jumping ahead with a 25-19 first-game win, went down 25-15, 15-13 in the second and third games.
In the rematch against Ballard, Marshall County won 25-19, 25-19. On Thursday night, the Lady Bombers won 25-19, 21-25, 25-19, 25-16.
“I was proud of the girls,” Langhi said. “They were happy. They played really well. This was really good for them to get some games under their belts.”
